Grizzlies Drop Home Series to Beach Bums

Gateway Grizzlies News Release

SAUGET, Ill. - It took three hours and 32 minutes to decide Sunday afternoon's slugfest series wrap up between the Grizzlies and the Beach Bums that served Gateway an eventual 12-6 defeat.

Hits were not in short supply in the batting free-for-all, with Gateway (7-8) collecting nine and Traverse City (9-6) posting 15. Third baseman Chris McClendon notched a healthy effort at the plate for the Grizzlies, batting 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Outfielder Jon Myers aided offensively with three RBI on his lone hit, while Vladimir Frias rounded out the home squad's notables with a 2-for-4 effort and a run.

Grizzlie right-hander Patrick Arnold saw only two innings of action in his highly anticipated Frontier League debut, surrendering only one run on three hits before leaving with an injury in his first start and no decision. Gateway dipped deep into their bullpen in the matinee, calling on five hurlers in the loss. Reliever Chris Enourato (0-2) was tagged with the blemish due in part to a three run seventh inning that piled on as a result of two hits and three walks.

The opposing rotation suffered similar setbacks, as the Beach Bums were forced to utilize five arms in the day game. Starter David Deminsky managed only three frames while giving up five hits and two earned.

Walks (11) again hurt the defensive platform of the Grizzlies, who lead the Frontier League with 83 free passes. Traverse City went yard three times in the afternoon downing of Gateway while collecting seven total dingers in the series. They are currently tops in the FL with 25 home runs.

Sunday's tilt served as WIBI Family Friendly Faith Night at GCS Ballpark with a post-game concert by "The Great Romance" that immediately followed play. "The Great Romance" performed on the right field picnic deck while fans enjoyed the showcase from the bleachers.

The Grizzlies finished their six game home stand with a 3-3 mark and will hit the road for another six-contest excursion, starting in Schaumburg, Ill. with a series tilt against the Boomers.

Gateway will look to build on a 7-8 mark in the early season, and keep their sights set on division rival and the league record leading River City Rascals. The Grizzlies will finish their early season journey in Ohio with a three-fold set against the Lake Erie Crushers before heading back home to the friendly confines of GCS Ballpark in Sauget.
