Miners Sweep Schaumburg

Marion, IL - The Miners get their first series sweep of the 2012 season as they defeated the Schaumburg Boomers 9-5. Miners starter Brian Fowler pitched five solid innings as he earned his second win of the season.

After Schaumburg took an early 1-0 lead, the Miners struck back in the bottom of the second ining. Will Block led off the inning with a double. Ken Gregory then brought him in with a RBI single but was thrown out at second. With Phil Butler on second after a one out double, Jason Ganek then brought him in with a RBI base hit to give the Miners a 2-1 lead.

Schaumburg scored a run in the top of the third to tie it, but the Miners opened things up in the bottom of the third. Chad Maddox led off the inning with a single then advanced to second on a wild pitch. With Cannon Lester on first and Chad Maddox on third, Will Block hit an RBI single to score Maddox to give the Miners a 3-2 lead. Ken Gregory was up next and he hit a 2 RBI single to give the Miners a 5-2 lead.

The Boomers got another run in the top of the fourth, which then opened the doors for Southern Illinois in the bottom of the fourth. Jake Kaase hit a one out single to get the offense rolling. Chad Maddox then moved him over with a base hit. Matt Fields hit into a fielder's choice which brought in a run. Cannon Lester then got on with a base hit which set up a two run home run by Will Block to give the Miners a 9-2 lead.

The Miners won the game 9-5 as Anthony Collazo, Gabriel Shaw and Max Peterson all pitched in relief. With the win, the Miners advanced to 10-5 on the season. Schaumburg drops to 8-7. The Miners begin a six game road trip that starts Tuesday night in Washington, Pa as they face the Wild Things. The Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show on the Miners Radio Network begins at 5:45 pm with Mike Ventola. First pitch is at 6:05 pm.
