Washington Wild Things News Release

Joliet, IL- The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, slammed the door on the Joliet Slammers in their series finale, 13-5.

Washington quickly got on the board in the top of the first inning, when a double off the right center field wall by first baseman Michael Bando drove in center fielder Allen Boyer. But, Joliet responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the second inning, Wild Things right fielder Robbie Garvey hit a sacrifice fly to Slammers right fielder Jimmy Walters that allowed designated hitter Mitch Dening to score. The Slammers responded once again by scoring a run of their own to keep their lead and make it 4-2.

A three-run home run by Dening in the top of the third inning drove in third baseman Nick Lockwood and left fielder Trevor Pippin to give the Wild Things their first lead of the game since the first inning. Washington took a 7-4 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a single by second baseman Shain Stoner and an error that allowed Boyer to score.

Washington's offense continued its explosion in the top of the fifth inning by scoring six runs, all of which occurred with two outs against them. The first run was scored by Dening, on a single by Garvey. A wild pitch allowed both shortstop Michael Mooney and Garvey to get into scoring position, and a Boyer single allowed both to score. A double by Stoner brought Boyer home, while Stoner himself was brought home on a later double hit by Bando, his second of the game. The final run scored of the inning was by Lockwood, who took advantage of an error by Slammers first baseman Kyle Maunus. Joliet committed four errors on the day, which Washington wholly took advantage of.

Washington's defense held strong throughout the entire game and only gave up one run after their scoring eruption in the fifth inning, an RBI single by Joliet designated hitter Erik Lis in the bottom of the seventh.

Wild Things starting pitcher Casey Barnes spent six innings on the mound and allowed four runs (all earned) on eight hits. Barnes walked two and struck out one, and did not allow a run after the second inning. Reliever Nick Cicio pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed no runs on one hit. He walked one batter and struck out two.

Slammers starter Tommy Mendoza lasted three innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits. Mendoza struck out one batter and allowed two walks. Jim Schult pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief for Mendoza and allowed eight runs (XX earned) on six hits. Schult had three walks and three strikeouts.

The Wild Things return home on Tuesday, June 5th, for a six-game homestand. They face off against the Normal CornBelters at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, which is Teacher Appreciation Night at the ballpark. Tickets are available and can be purchased by visiting the CONSOL Energy Park box office, www.washingtonwildthings.com, or by calling 866-456-WILD.
