Florence Y'alls News Release
SAUGET, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies entered Saturday night leading the league in homeruns.
They left Saturday still leading the league as they hit three including a grand slam to down the Florence Freedom 11-3 at GCS Ballpark.
Florence took an early lead 1-0 in the first to back Charles Williams who was making his first professional start. After a Grizzlie error by second baseman Adrian Cantu allowed the inning to continue, Ryan Basham doubled home Billy Mottram for the early advantage.
With the double, Basham tied Greg Stone's franchise record of 223 hits all-time in a Freedom uniform. He would later move into first place all alone with a single in the fourth.
That was about it as far as things the Freedom could celebrate on Saturday night. The Grizzlies would go on to score the games' next 11 runs including a two out, three-run homerun by Stephen Douglas in the second to take a 3-1 lead.
Williams' night came to a close in the third after he allowed an RBI single to Charlie Lisk, and then loaded the bases to set the stage for Phillip White's grand slam.
Joseph Scarperota hit a solo blast for Gateway in the sixth to make it 10-1 at the time.
Florence scored their final two runs off reliever Jordan Craft with a two RBI double from Jay Johnson in the ninth.
Adam Bowling (1-1) picked up the win for Gateway going 6.2 innings. Bowling allowed just one run, unearned, while striking out four. Williams (1-1) allowed eight runs in 2.1 innings for the Freedom in the loss.
Florence (9-6) and Gateway (6-9) will conclude their season series Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. from GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois. The Freedom lead the season series 3-2. Catch the Freedom while the team is on the road at 106.7 FM WNKR or online at 1067WNKR.com.
