Washington, Pa - The Washington Wild Things (5-9), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, beat the River City Rascals handily (11-6) at CONSOL Energy Park Saturday night.
The Washington bats posted 16 hits during the game, giving the Wild Things their third consecutive victory, and the opportunity to avenge their road losses to the Rascals. River City swept Washington in late May.
The Rascals scored three runs on four hits to open Saturday's game versus the Wild Things. Washington answered in the bottom of the inning with three hits, including a Jacob Dempsey base-hit to drive in Grant Psomas.
Washington attempted to add to their lead in the second inning, but left the bases loaded when Psomas flew out.
Washington succeeded in capturing the lead, however, in the third inning when Joe Spiers' RBI double drove in Dempsey, and Brett Grandstrand doubled to drive in Phil Laurent and Spiers.
The fifth inning gave the Rascals the lead again, but not for long; Alan Robbins smacked a solo shot over the left field wall to knot it up at five.
Washington's scoring continued in the sixth when Matt Sutton drove in Psomas and Dempsey tripled of the centerfield wall, plating Sutton, and giving Washington a two run edge.
In the seventh inning, River City chipped away, adding one run. But Washington's Robbins smacked one over the video board to in the bottom of the inning to regain Washington's two run lead. Dempsey added insurance in the bottom of the eighth with a three run homer, giving the Wild Things an 11-6 lead.
Rick Austin (1-1) gets the win for Washington, allowing one run, one hit, one walk, and striking out three in two innings of work. Nick Peterson added his second save with two strike outs in 1.1 innings of work.
Washington and River City will meet the final game of this three-game series Sunday when first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Air time on WJPA 95.3 F.M. is 6:25 p.m. Tickets are available at the box office.
