Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Avon, OH - The Lake Erie Crushers bided their time and finally broke through with a couple of big innings as they beat the Rockford RiverHawks by the final of 7-5 on Saturday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The Crushers actually led the game 2-1 in the third inning after an RBI double by catcher Nick Maragas, who would eventually score himself. But the RiverHawks battled back to take a 3-2 lead all the way into the sixth inning before Lake Erie would finally knock out starter Jay Monti.
The Crushers bunched together four straight hits to score three runs. Gordon Gronkowski hit an RBI single, Andrew Davis followed with a run scoring triple, and then Tim Binkoski finished the parade with an RBI single.
Lake Erie would keep it going in the seventh inning as Luke Hetherington smashed a two run double to bring home Jodam Rivera and Drew Saylor to give the Crushers a 7-3 advantage. Hetherington finished the game with three hits, a stolen base, and two runs batted in. "
Crusher starter Darwin DeLeon worked two innings in relief of Brent Lysander to earn his first win of the season. DeLeon bounced back after a rough outing on Thursday when he lasted just a third of an inning. Tonight, the young lefty allowed no runs and just a hit while striking out two.
"Darwin gave us two solid innings tonight," said Manager John Massarelli. "That was more like the guy we saw in his first two outings and in spring training."
The Crushers and the RiverHawks will finish their three game series tomorrow at All Pro Freight Stadium starting at 5:05. Paul Fagan will make the start for Lake Erie against Rockford's Mike Rogers.
The Lake Erie Crushers are the newest expansion team in the Frontier League, an independent professional league with 12 teams throughout the Midwest. The team plays its home games at All Pro Freight Stadium, the new 5,000 capacity ballpark located at the intersection of I-90 and Route 611 in Avon. Season tickets and Mini-plans are on sale now!
