RiverHawks' rally falls short in 7-5 loss

AVON, Ohio - The Rockford RiverHawks rallied for two late runs, but stranded the tying runs in the ninth inning and lost, 7-5, Saturday at Lake Erie.

Robbie Knapp hit his third home run and Jason James matched his career best with a four-hit game. James has 308 career hits, three short of Ben Fjelland's all-time RiverHawks record. James also drove in a run and is two short of Fjelland's career RBI record of 164.

The Crushers scored three runs in the sixth inning to knock out Rockford starter Jay Monti (1-3) and led the rest of the way. Gordon Gronkowski singled home a run. Andy Davis' RBI triple broke a 3-3 tie and drove Monti from the hill. Tim Binkoski made it 5-3 with a RBI single.

Luke Hetherington doubled home two runs in the seventh to give the Crushers some insurance. Knapp hit a leadoff homer in the eighth. In the ninth, the RiverHawks scored a run, but left two men on base.

Darwin DeLeon (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to get the win.

The series finale is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. CDT Sunday. The game is scheduled for local broadcast on ESPN 1380 and ESPN1380.com.

The RiverHawks return home on Tuesday, June 9 for a six-game homestand. It starts with a 7:05 p.m. game against Windy City. It's Faith Night, when area churches and religious groups are invited to attend the game, courtesy of an anonymous donor. In addition, it's a Two-For Tuesday, when hot dogs are two for the price of one.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season this summer. The RiverHawks play their home opener at 7:05 p.m. May 26 against the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti. The RiverHawks host the 2009 Frontier League All-Star Game at 7:05 p.m. on July 15.
