WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH - The Utah Grizzlies are just one day away from opening the 2002-03 American Hockey League season and today they announced the 24 players that are on their opening day roster. 14 of the 24 players saw action with the Grizzlies last season.
Among those returning is the Grizzlies' leading scorer from last year Jim Montgomery (71 points). In all, three of the top five scorers return to the Grizz (Montgomery, Greg Hawgood and Steve Gainey). The Grizzlies primary National Hockey League affiliate remains the Dallas Stars but the Grizz has taken on the Montreal Canadiens as their secondary affiliate. Thus far, Montreal has assigned three players to Utah (Eric Chouinard, Eric Landry and Matthieu Descoteaux).
In goal for the Grizzlies, one-time Utah player Corey Hirsch returns for his second tour of duty, while rookie Jason Bacashihua will split time in net with Hirsch.
Returning to coach the Grizzlies is Don Hay whom compiled a 40-29-6-5 record last season in his first with Utah.
