Griffins drop 3-2 decision to Rampage

SAN ANTONIO - The Grand Rapids Griffins (37-17-8-0) fell 3-2 to the San Antonio Rampage (23-30-7-0) in regulation on Thursday night at the SBC Center. The Griffins squandered a one-goal lead entering the third period, marking the first time since Dec. 4, 2002 that the Griffins lost a regular season game in regulation when leading after 40 minutes.

San Antonio opened the scoring when a whirling Gregory Campbell banged in a deflected Denis Shvidki shot at 1:52 of the second period. Kyle Rossiter also assisted on the goal.

Grand Rapids answered two goals in a 51-second span in the second period to gain a 2-1 lead. Newcomer Jim Baxter blasted a loose puck past Travis Scott for a power play tally at 11:55. Kevin Miller and Hugo Boisvert earned assists on the goal. Baxter, making his American Hockey League debut, was signed by the Griffins on Wednesday.

Fifty-one seconds later, Jiri Hudler tipped a wrist shot by Danny Groulx for his twelfth goal of the season. Nathan Robinson also assisted on the goal.

The Rampage drew even with a goal by Jason Spence at 11:03 of the third period from Greg Crozier and Lukas Krajicek. Spence gathered the rebound of his own shot and banged it past Joey MacDonald.

Just one minute, fifty-one seconds later, Brent Cullaton gave San Antonio a 3-2 lead with a goal at 12:54 of the third period. Matt Dzieduszycki and Shvidki assisted on the tally.

MacDonald's record goes to 18-5-4 despite stopping 32 shots. Scott made 25 saves for the win.

Grand Rapids will travel to Houston to play the Aeros tomorrow at the Toyota Center at 8 p.m.
