Cleveland Barons News Release

CLEVELAND — The San Jose Sharks announced late Wednesday night that they acquired defenseman Jason Marshall from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a fifth round selection in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Marshall, a 13-year professional, will report to the Cleveland Barons in time for Friday night's game against the Hamilton Bulldogs. Doug Wilson, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Sharks, made the announcement.

Marshall, 33, was playing for the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League at the time of the trade. In Houston, Marshall registered seven goals and 12 assists in 49 games. Marshall also appeared in 12 contests with the Wild this year recording one goal and four assists along with 18 penalty minutes.

The six-foot-two, 195-pound blueliner played in 15 of Minnesota's 18 playoff contests during their run to the Western Conference Finals last season. A native of Cranbrook, British Columbia, Marshall has played in 491 career NHL games and has totaled 16 goals and 45 assists with Anaheim, Washington and Minnesota.

"We are pleased to add Jason to our organization as he provides experience, character and depth," said Wilson. "He comes from a fine organization and has been well coached. He fits the mold for what we look for in a player."

***Quotes On The Acquisition Of Jason Marshall***

Barons President Michael T. Lehr

"Adding a veteran player with the young talent we have can do nothing but propel the team to the Calder Cup playoffs. To go out and get a veteran shows the organization's commitment to winning in Cleveland now and in the future."

Head Coach Roy Sommer

"He is a hard-nosed, veteran defenseman who can move pucks and bring a physical presence to the game. He was number one on our list as far as veteran defensemen at the AHL level. He is definitely a valuable commodity that will help the organization."

Assistant Coach David Cunniff

"He gives the organization a lot of flexibility. He's a great veteran that will teach our young guys how to get things done. Plus, he is a great call-up option for the Sharks if they need it."

Barons Goaltender Seamus Kotyk

"He has a lot of experience and we need that. He will help out the entire blueline down the stretch. For a lot of us, the playoffs are uncharted water and he will be a steady hand to guide us through."

Barons Goaltender Nolan Schaefer

"This can only improve our team. We are doing extremely well as a young club but he has a lot of playoff experience and he'll show us the way to get it done."
