Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
BALTIMORE, MD - The Baltimore Orioles confirmed on Tuesday that 2018 first-round draft pick Cadyn Grenier will begin his professional career with the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds. The former collegiate shortstop is expected to be activated in time for the Shorebirds' Wednesday home game against the Hagerstown Suns.
Grenier, 21, is coming off a decorated amateur career at Oregon State University, which ended last Thursday with a College World Series championship. In 182 games over three seasons with the Beavers, Grenier batted .284 with 11 home runs, 102 RBIs, and an .800 OPS, as well as a .964 fielding percentage as OSU's primary shortstop.
The 2018 campaign was especially memorable for Grenier - he hit .319 with an .870 OPS, pounding six homers and driving in 47 runs. With his offensive prowess and outstanding glove work, he was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and took home the Brooks Wallace Award as the nation's top collegiate shortstop. Grenier joins the likes of major leaguers Alex Bregman (2013), Trea Turner (2014), and Dansby Swanson (2015) in the pantheon of Wallace Award winners.
Grenier and the Beavers' finest hour came this past week in Omaha, Neb. in the championship round of the College World Series. After dropping Game 1 to Arkansas, OSU faced elimination in Game 2, trailing the Razorbacks 3-2 with two outs in the top of the ninth. Down to his final strike, Grenier laced a single through the left side, scoring teammate Zach Clayton from third to tie the game. Taylor Larnach followed with a go-ahead two-run homer, lifting the Beavers to a 5-3 win. Oregon State won Game 3 and its third national title the next day, 5-0. Grenier scored two runs in the clincher and was named to the All-NCAA Tournament team.
The Orioles drafted Grenier 37th overall in Competitive Balance Round A in last month's MLB Draft. The two sides reached an agreement on a contract on Tuesday.
Grenier, a native of Henderson, Nev., graduated from the famed Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, the same alma mater of recent major leaguers Joey Rickard (Orioles) and Joey Gallo (Rangers), as well as nine-year major league veteran and 1995 American League Rookie of the Year Marty Cordova.
The St. Louis Cardinals originally drafted Grenier in the 21st round (641st overall) in the 2015 MLB Draft, but Grenier chose to honor his commitment to Oregon State instead.
Grenier will sport the familiar orange and black when he joins the Shorebirds, who open a six-game homestand with a Fourth of July showdown against Governor's Cup rivals Hagerstown. First pitch on Wednesday is set for 6:05 p.m. with gates at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium opening at 4:30. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 5:50 with Will DeBoer and Drew Williams on the call.
