Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - One night after suffering a stinging ninth-inning defeat, the Delmarva Shorebirds brought some ninth-inning sting of their own, scoring three times to upend the Lakewood BlueClaws 5-2 on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Park.

WIth the game tied 2-2, Ben Breazeale led off the ninth with a single. Kirvin Moesquit then took his place at first with a bunt fielder's choice. Moesquit breezed up to second on a wild pitch, then Mason McCoy hit a soft liner to short that caused trouble for Nick Maton. Moesquit advanced to third on the infield single, and McCoy soon after swiped second. That forced Lakewood to intentionally walk Zach Jarrett, loading the bases with one out.

On the first pitch he saw, Trevor Craport belted a flyball to deep left that one-hopped against the wall. Moesquit and McCoy scored easily on Craport's two-run double, and the Shorebirds (7-6, 42-38) had a 4-2 lead. The infield crept in with men still at second and third, and Branden Becker looped a single over short to bring home Jarrett and make it 5-2.

Nick Vespi ensured there would be no repeat of the previous night's three-run meltdown, overwhelming the BlueClaws (8-4, 49-32) in the ninth to seal the deal and clinch both a four-game split and winning seven-game road trip.

Vespi (2-3) earned his second win in four nights at FirstEnergy Park, allowing one hit and facing the minimum in his two scoreless innings. Julian Garcia (2-2) took the loss in relief for the BlueClaws, surrendering three runs on five hits in his two innings.

Delmarva pounced early as Moesquit led off the game with a double to the left center gap. Three batters later, Craport pulled one through the shift for a line drive single to left, scoring Moesquit to get the Shorebirds on the board. In the second, Jean Carrillo drew a leadoff walk, and Will Robertson followed with a double to move Carrillo to third. Ryan Ripken rolled an RBI groundout to first, bringing home Carrillo to make it 2-0 Shorebirds.

Rodolfo Duran blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the second to get Lakewood on the board. Then in the fifth, Simon Muzziotti and Jake Scheiner put together back-to-back two-out doubles, bringing home the run to tie it at 2-2.

Shorebirds starter Brenan Hanifee shook off the little damage and powered through to his 10th Quality Start in a no-decision. The Orioles' No. 7 prospect allowed two runs on eight hits over seven innings, walking none and striking out six.

The BlueClaws' Will Stewart survived his shaky start and put together five solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking three and fanning seven. Jonathan Hennigan came in and shut Delmarva down for the sixth and seventh innings, while Garcia handled a clean eighth until the Shorebirds' eruption in the ninth.

Craport finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs, making him the third South Atlantic Leaguer this year to scale the 50-RBI plateau. Becker went 2-for-4 with an RBI and HBP, while Moesquit doubled and scored two more times to give him an SAL-best 57 runs.

Muzziotti went 2-for-4 with a double and run to lead the BlueClaws, while Edwin Rodriguez and Josh Stephen also managed multi-hit games.

The win gives the Shorebirds a 4-3 record on the road trip, their first winning spell away from Perdue Stadium since going 4-3 in Lexington and Columbia on May 9-15.

The Shorebirds now return home for a six-game stretch at Perdue Stadium, starting with a Fourth of July extravaganza on Wednesday against the Hagerstown Suns. Matthias Dietz (6-2, 3.56) is penciled in as Delmarva's starter against Hagerstown's Brigham Hill (0-1, 2.19). First pitch is set for a special time of 6:05 with gates opening early at 4:30. The Shorebirds will wear special patriotic jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game, followed by the biggest Q105 Fireworks Show of the season. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 5:50 with Will DeBoer and Drew Williams on the call.
