CHARLESTON, W.V. - After being promoted to Pittsburgh June 27, Tanner Anderson made his MLB debut with the parent club Monday night in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. Anderson had previously spent all of 2018 with Triple-A Indianapolis, going 1-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 24 appearances while striking out 24 batters to just six walks over 34.2 innings. The Harvard product is the 70th former Power player to play in the big leagues.
In his debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Anderson spun two innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits while striking out one and walking two in a 17-1 loss.
A 20th-round pick in 2015, Anderson debuted with the Bristol Pirates that season and worked his way to a 4-0 mark with a 2.38 ERA over 12 relief appearances, fanning 19 batters over 22.2 innings. He earned a late-season promotion to the West Virginia Black Bears, where he was summoned out of the bullpen three times.
The Boynton Beach, Fla., native split 2016 between the Power and the Advanced-A Bradenton Marauders, posting a 2-2 record with a 3.42 ERA in 19 games (one start) while hurling 47.1 innings and punching out 33 sluggers in Charleston. After getting the bump to Bradenton early in the second half, the right-hander excelled in the Florida State League, splitting a pair of decisions over 17 outings (two starts) with a 3.76 earned run average.
Anderson was utilized as both a starter and reliever in 2017 with Double-A Altoona, ultimately taking the mound in 30 games (19 starts) while registering a 10-8 record and a 3.38 ERA in the Curve's championship campaign. The 25-year-old twirled a career-high 133.1 innings with 97 strikeouts to 33 walks. Anderson's best start came July 26, 2017, at Reading, spinning an eight-inning, five-hit gem with a career-high nine strikeouts.
Prior to his MLB call-up, Anderson boasted a career 19-12 record with a 3.26 ERA in 105 games (22 starts) over 284.2 innings, recording 196 strikeouts to 63 walks.
Anderson is the fifth former Power player to make his MLB debut in 2018, following right-handers Clay Holmes, Colten Brewer and Nick Kingham, as well as outfielder Austin Meadows. For information on all of the former Power players who have logged time in the Major Leagues, visit www.wvpower.com.
