Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Cadyn Grenier roped a walkoff single down the left field line in the bottom of the ninth to give the Delmarva Shorebirds a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws on Monday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
With the score knotted at 2-2, Adam Hall lashed a single to right to begin the frame for the Shorebirds (4-1, 52-22). A swinging bunt from Doran Turchin then allowed Hall to scamper to second, setting the stage for Grenier, who attacked the first pitch and pulled it over the third base bag headed toward the left field corner. As Hall touched up he immediately turned to sprint to Grenier, leading the way for a swarm of his teammates who mobbed the Orioles' No. 16 prospect after his first career walkoff hit.
Drew Rom (5-1) earned the win in relief for Delmarva, allowing two runs in four innings on four hits and three walks while striking out two. Rafi Gonnell (1-1) took the loss for the BlueClaws (31-44, 2-3) after going the final 3.1 innings and allowing one run on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Shorebirds fired the opening salvo in the second. Grenier laced a triple to lead off the inning and then crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 Delmarva.
Delmarva doubled their advantage in the third. Nick Horvath poked a one-out double and then moved to third on a balk. Edison Lantigua brought Horvath home on a sacrifice fly to left, giving the Shorebirds a 2-0 edge.
Lakewood battled back to tie the game in the sixth. Luis Garcia worked a walk to begin the frame and Abrahan Gutierrez followed with a single to right to put two aboard. Carlos De La Cruz then ripped a single to center, scoring Garcia as Gutierrez raced to third. After a strikeout, a wild pitch allowed Gutierrez to scamper home and tie the game at 2-2.
The BlueClaws threatened to take the lead in the ninth. Yerwin Trejo beat out a one-out bunt base hit and Jonathan Guzman knocked a single to right to put two on. Rafael Marchan then hit a laser to first that Seamus Curran speared to turn an unassisted double play and extinguish the threat, setting up Grenier's heroics in the bottom of the inning.
Grenier's walkoff hit gave him a multi-hit game as he finished 2-for-4 with a triple, run, and the game-winning RBI for the Shorebirds. Hall collected his 26th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with a double and the winning run.
Trejo finished with two hits for Lakewood, both on bunts, while Seth Lancaster collected a hit and two stolen bases. The BlueClaws stranded nine runners on base and went just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Gray Fenter started for Delmarva but did not factor into the decision. Fenter worked four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while walking three and punching out five. Matthew Hammonds needed just eight pitches in a scoreless fifth to serve as a bridge from Fenter to Rom.
Lakewood starter Tyler McKay didn't factor into the decision either after allowing two runs in five innings, allowing three hits, one walk, and striking out four.
The walkoff win was the Shorebirds' sixth of the season, with all six coming from different players. Jean Carlos Encarnacion, Daniel Fajardo, Andrew Fregia, Alexis Torres, and Ben Breazeale all preceded Grenier with their late-game heroics.
The Shorebirds meet the BlueClaws in the second game of the series on Tuesday night. SAL All-Star starter Grayson Rodriguez (6-1, 2.42) toes the bump for Delmarva while Lakewood turns to Jhordany Mezquita (2-4, 4.94). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00. Tuesday night at Perdue Stadium is Ticket Amnesty Night, as fans will be able to redeem any unused ticket from a previous game during the 2019 season for an upper reserved ticket for Tuesday's game. It is also Wag Your Tail Tuesday presented by Concord Pet Foods & Supplies. Pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer and Sam Jellinek on the call.
