LATE ROME RUNS KEEP SUNS AT BAY: A late charge from the Hagerstown Suns was held at Bay by three seventh and eighth inning runs from the Rome Braves to defeat Hagerstown 8-4 at State Mutual Stadium Sunday afternoon. Despite a Jackson Cluff two-bagger that scored Gilbert Lara and Justin Connell bringing Hagerstown within one in the top of the sixth, the Suns (32-42, 2-2) bullpen could not keep the Braves (32-41, 2-2) bats silent to end the game.Rome took advantage of Tomas Alastre (L, 3-7) early, when Greg Cullen homered to right to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the first. After Hagerstown tied the game in the top of the fourth with a Lara double that scored Jacob Rhinesmith, the Braves pulled in front again in the bottom of the inning, utilizing an Alastre wild pitch to lead 2-1.
NEW KID IN TOWN: Reid Schaller has been promoted to Hagerstown from Extended Spring Training. Schaller joins RHP Chandler Day as former Vanderbilt Commodores to play in Hagerstown this season. The 6'3" righty was picked in the third round of last year's draft prior to splitting time between the GCL and Auburn. He finished the season with a 2-3 record and a 4.65 ERA in 12 starts across both levels. He fanned 32 batters in 40.2 innings in MiLB last year. The Nationals' 15th-ranked prospect according to MLB.com is scheduled to start tonight's game against the Hickory Crawdads.
MULTI-MILESTONE: Gilbert Lara's two-hit game produced the 150th Suns multi-hit game of the season. The power-hitting infielder has produced the most on the roster to this point. 20 of Lara's 22 multiple-hit games have been two hit games. He is one of four Suns with 15 or more multi-hit games this year. The other three are Jacob Rhinesmith, Justin Connell and Cody Wilson.
UH-OH, ALASTRE: Starter Tomas Alastre has struggled for much of the 2019 season. After allowing five earned runs in as many innings last night, the righty has an ERA of 6.16. Alastre has now surrendered 17 runs in 20 innings pitched since May 31 despite working six innings of two-hit baseball June 5 at Lakewood.
ROAD WOES: After dropping the latter two games of a four-game set against the Braves, the Suns 2019 road record fell to 14-24. That's compared to an 18-18 record at Municipal Stadium this season. The only team with a worse road record in the northern division is Lakewood, who sports a 12-25 road record and a 19-18 home record. In the Southern Division, both Columbia and Rome have less wins, sporting records of 12-21 and 13-21, respectively. The best road record in the South Atlantic League belongs to Delmarva, who have won 26 of their 37 road contests.
LIKING THE ROAD: Jake Irvin has been great on the road this season. After last night's quality start where he allowed just three hits and one run over the course of six innings, the Oklahoma-product has now recorded three of his four quality starts this season on the road.
TREMENDOUS TURNER: Trey Turner was activated from Extended Spring Training May 8, since then, he has appeared in eight games, spinning 12.1 innings and punching out 23 batters. Opponents are merely hitting .119 against him in the time he's been in the South Atlantic League.
