This past week the Road Warriors played South Division rivals Florida Everblades and Gwinnett Gladiators. The Road Warriors won both games and continue to stay on the heels of Gwinnett. The Road Warriors trail Gwinnett by two points for first place in the South Division and have one game in hand.
Thursday vs. Florida Everblades
Greenville started the game with a quick surge as Brendan Connolly began the scoring 38 seconds in receiving a pass from Francis Verreault behind the net. Two fights occurred early in the first period and the momentum soon shifted to the Everblades as they scored three unanswered goals. The teams would exchange goals in the second period and early in the third. Shayne Wiebe started the flurry of goals with his sixth of the season and second of the game. Florida would respond soon after, this time shorthanded, to recapture a two goal lead. Brandon Wong would bring the game within one as he scored his 60th goal as a Road Warrior and continued his point streak to nine games. The Road Warriors began an onslaught of shots and chances that the Everblades could not contain. Jeremy Gouchie would tie the game with just over five minutes left which forced overtime. Connolly started the scoring and would finish it scoring his sixth of the season and second of the game to beat the Florida Everblades 6-5. Lieuwen notched his sixth win making 22 saves.
Saturday at Gwinnett Gladiators
The game started off in the Gladiators direction as they outshot the Road Warriors 16-6 in the first period. The Gladiators had chances from all parts of the rink but were not able to beat rookie goalie Nathan Lieuwen. The second period was more balanced than the first. Gwinnett still outshot the Road Warriors 10-9 but play was even and both teams had multiple opportunities. Brendan Connolly broke the scoreless tie four minutes into the period with an unassisted goal. Later in the period, Gwinnet was able to capitalize on the powerplay. Rylan Galiardi tipped in his seventh goal of the season with a shot from Dallas Jackson. The third period was just as tight as the first two periods. More chances became available as four penalties were handed out in a 2:20 span. A five-minute boarding major was handed to Justin Weller as well as a game misconduct. Connolly took the worst end of the hit and was taken to the locker room for the remainder of the game. In the closing minute Brandon Wong played the puck to the point and Steven Delisle fired it past Mike Lee for his first goal of the year which gave the Road Warriors a 2-1 victory. Sean Berkstresser also assisted on the goal and Wong extended his point steak to ten games. Lieuwen, the second star of the game, stopped 33 of 34 shots and earned the victory in net. Delisle was the first star.
