Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - The Lakewood BlueClaws were dealt a crushing blow to their hopes of winning the First Half title in the South Atlantic League Northern Division as they lost 4-3 on Saturday. It was the 2nd consecutive day the BlueClaws lost in walk-off fashion. Lakewood fell behind 2-0 in the 1st inning, but fought back to tie it and take a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 9th inning. Greensboro just did not give up and after back to back walks allowed by Juan Sosa, a Fielders Choice ground out and a throwing error allowed Mark Canha to score from 2nd Base and tied the game at 3-3 with 2 outs. Lisalberto Bonilla came on and relieved Sosa, and he allowed a game winning single to Aaron Dudley that scored Marcell Ozuna and end the ballgame 4-3.
Jesse Biddle (3-5) got the start for Lakewood and got off to a rough start allowing 3 hits, 1 walk, and 2 runs in the 1st inning. After that he really settled in nicely allowing just 3 more hits and no walks over the remainder of his 6 innings pitched. He retired the final 10 batters he faced and left with the score tied 2-2. Juan Sosa (2-1) pitched a perfect 7th and 8th inning for Lakewood before getting roughed up in the 9th inning and tagged with his first loss as a BlueClaw. Neither Starting Pitcher factored in the decision with Mike Ojala picking up the win out of the bullpen for Greensboro to advance to 3-1 on the year.
Jim Murphy singled and Geancarlo Mendez doubled to lead off the 4th inning for Lakewood. Then Anthony Hewitt picked up an RBI on a groundout to 2B that scored Murphy to cut the deficit to 2-1. Catcher Torre Langley then followed that up with a an RBI single to tie the game up. SS Edgar Duran had the big hit that scored Hewitt after his lead-off double in the top of the 9th. Mendez and Dabbs each finished 2-4 in the game as the only 2 BlueClaws with more than 1 hit.
With the win, Greensboro moves to 31-23, 3 games up on Lakewood who falls to 28-25. Saturday night Lakewood faces almost a must-win situation in the final game of the 4 game series. RHP Garett Claypool (1-2, 2.00 ERA) will throw for the Blueclaws and RHP Rett Varner (1-0, 2.65 ERA) will get the start for the Grasshoppers. First Pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
