Greensboro Swarm News Release
(GREENSBORO, NC) - The Greensboro Swarm, the NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets, edged out the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (Indiana Pacers affiliate) in a 138-137 victory on HBCU Night at the Novant Health Fieldhouse. Greensboro improves to 7-10 in the regular season while Fort Wayne falls to 10-7.
The Swarm got off to a great start with a 12-0 scoring run to open the game. Greensboro would continue to stretch its lead through the duration of the period and capped off the quarter with a near half-court buzzer beater from Kobi Simmons. Very little changed in the second period as the Mad Ants were unable to close in on the Swarm. Headed into halftime, Greensboro possessed a 13-point advantage.
In the third quarter, Fort Wayne began to show its teeth and chipped away at the Swarm's lead, even narrowing it to eight points. Coming into the contest, the Mad Ants had been victorious in three of its last four games and had seen exceptional scoring performances from the likes of Justin Anderson, Trevelin Queen and Gabe York.
Despite leading the contest from the start, the fourth quarter proved to be a challenge for Greensboro. With injuries to Kai Jones and Isaiah Whaley in the third quarter, the Swarm played a smaller lineup, which allowed the Mad Ants to attack the basket. Fort Wayne forced seven turnovers, including a late-game inbound steal-and-score from Queen to cut the deficit to two points with 17.5 seconds left.
On the following Greensboro possession, Xavier Sneed drew a foul and split his free throws to give the Swarm a one-point lead. With 1.1 seconds remaining, Fort Wayne turned to Elfrid Payton, on a give-n-go inbound pass. Payton's shot attempt fell short, and Greensboro emerged with the win.
Greensboro saw top performances from Sneed and Jalen Crutcher who each had 22 points, Simmons finished with 21 points, James Bouknight gave the team 19 while Jones left with 12 points and 10 rebounds which put him at five double-doubles for the regular season.
The Greensboro Swarm will hit the road and travel to take on the Motor City Cruise for its next game at 7 p.m. on February 13.
