Greensboro Swarm News Release
(GREENSBORO, N.C.) - The Greensboro Swarm, the NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets, scored the final six points in regulation but came up short, 131-129, in a thrilling overtime game to the Erie BayHawks on Friday at the Fieldhouse at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. The BayHawks' (8-15) Zylan Cheatham made two free throws with six seconds remaining in overtime and Erie held firm on the Swarm's (4-19) last possession for the victory.
Erie (New Orleans Pelicans affiliate) had a strong start to the game, outscoring the Swarm, 33-20, in the first quarter. The BayHawks held its largest lead of the game (21) in the second quarter after a Scottie Lindsey basket. However, the Swarm charged back in the final minutes before half to enter intermission with only a two-point deficit, 61-59.
It was the final 24 minutes where Caleb Martin excelled offensively. The Hornets' assignment player scored 20 of his 30 points on 8-for-12 shooting in the second half. Martin's well-rounded performance included seven rebounds, three assists and two steals in 42 minutes of action. It was the other Hornets' assignment, Jalen McDaniels, hitting a clutch 3-pointer with 31 second left in the fourth quarter to send the game into the two-minute overtime session.
McDaniels' night finished with 18 points, three rebounds and two steals in 27 minutes.
Greensboro also had strong efforts from Kobi Simmons (21 points, nine assists, six rebounds, three steals) and Joe Chealey (16 points, six assists, three rebounds). Thomas Welsh (14 points, 12 rebounds) came off the bench and recorded his sixth double-double of the season.
Erie's Vitto Brown had a game-high 31 points to go with nine rebounds. Cheatham had a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds. Josh Gray also had a double-double (19 points, 13 assists). The BayHawks played with three reserves (Lindsey, Taren Sullivan, Aubrey Dawkins) but the trio had a notable impact with a combined 24 points on 10-of-23 shooting, 13 rebounds and seven assists.
The Swarm return to the Fieldhouse on Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. tip against the Long Island Nets (Brooklyn Nets affiliate).
