Green and Truby Go Deep In Indianapolis Victory
June 9, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Designated hitter Russ Johnson lifted a sacrifice fly to score right fielder Michael Ryan in the top of the 11th and Indianapolis hung on for an 8-7 victory over Charlotte in front of 8,967 Saturday evening at Knights Stadium.
The Indians improve to an International League-best 38-23 overall and 17-10 on the road, while the Knights fall to 26-36 on the season and 16-16 at home. Sunday will be the Tribe's 55th consecutive day atop the IL's West Division.
Ryan, a defensive substitution in the fifth, trotted home after drawing a one-out walk and going from first to third on 1B Jose Hernandez's infield single.
The score in extra frames came after Charlotte knotted the affair with four runs in the ninth. The big inning also came against a Tribe bullpen that had not been scored on in its past six games (22.1 IP). CF Ryan Sweeney got things rolling with an RBI single to left. SS Tomas Perez followed with a two-run bloop to center. DH Brian Anderson then kept the contest alive with an RBI base knock to left.
Indianapolis jumped out to leads of 5-0 and 7-3, thanks to home runs by LF Nick Green and 3B Chris Truby. Green's fourth dinger of the season -- a three-run shot to left -- helped the Indians crack the scoreboard in the second. Truby's first roundtripper of the campaign -- a two-run shot to left -- keyed a two-run sixth.
Tribe 2B Luis Ordaz tied a season high with four hits on the night, while Green, Truby, SS Brian Bixler and RF Yurendell de Caster all collected two base knocks. Perez, Anderson and 2B Jason Bourgeois recorded three hits apiece for Charlotte.
Indianapolis RHP Dan Kolb (1.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 SO) improved to 2-1 with the win, while RHP Jesse Chavez (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) picked up his second save. Charlotte LHP Shaun Babula (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) fell to 2-1 with the loss.
Neither starter -- Indians RHP Marty McLeary (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO) or Knights LHP Heath Phillips (6.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO) -- figured in the decision.
The two teams return to Knights Stadium on Sunday at 2:15 p.m., for game two of the four-game set. RHP Bryan Bullington is slated to start for Indianapolis, while RHP Gavin Floyd is expected to get the nod for Charlotte.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 1:55 p.m.
