Dayton Dragons News Release
Comstock Park, MI â Paul Janish led off the fourth inning with his Dayton Dragons (18-25) team leading fourth home run giving the Dragons all the offense it would need in a 1-0 opening game win over the West Michigan Whitecaps (19-25). Janish took Whitecaps starter Josh Rainwater (LP, 0-1) over the wall in left and the Dayton pitching made the lead stand as the Dragons snapped a three game losing streak with the win.
Camilo Vazquez (WP, 2-2) was activated off the disabled list before the start of Monday night's game and pitched like he hadn't missed a game. The left hander took a perfect game into the fourth inning before allowing West Michigan its first hit, a single to centerfield by Steve Young. That would be all the âCaps would get off Vazquez who pitched into the sixth before being lifted.
James Morrison (SV, 2) picked up where Vazquez left off. Morrison took over after Vazquez departed with 5.2 innings of work to his credit. Vazquez allowed the one hit, struck out four and walked one with out allowing a run. Morrison took over with two down in the sixth inning and hit the first two batters he faced to load the bases. The right hander struck out Wilkin Ramirez to end the treat and preserve the 1-0 Dayton lead.
The Dragons only managed three hits on the night, but all were for extra bases. Dayton managed a pair of doubles and a homer off thee West Michigan pitchers. Habelito Hernandez picked up a double in the top of the second off Rainwater with Craig Tatum's double in the fifth coming off Matt Righter (ND). Dan Konechny (ND) was the lone âCaps reliever to not allow a hit.
In the ninth inning, West Michigan put the tying run on as Young picked up his second hit of the game with an infield single. The speedster was moved to second on a sac bunt by Jeff Frazier. Morrison got tough and struck out Ramirez for the second time on the night and got Matt Parrish to ground out to Drew Anderson at second base to end the game.
The two hours and one minute game time matches the quickest nine inning game the Dragons have played this season. Dayton was shutout 1-0 by the Peoria Chiefs this past Saturday in 121 minutes.
The Dragons and Whitecaps continue the four game series at Fifth Third Ballpark with a 6:35 PM first pitch on Tuesday night. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the game live beginning with the pre game show at 6:00 PM. The Dragons are scheduled to throw LHP Philippe Valiquette, with West Michigan sending RHP Andrew Kown to the mound.
