West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK - The Whitecaps held Dayton to just three hits, but the West Michigan offense was stagnant once again and produced just two hits in a 1-0 loss to the Dragons. It was the third time in the last seven games that West Michigan has been shut out. The Whitecaps have been held scoreless six times this season.

Josh Rainwater, who was the fourth round pick by Detroit in the 2003 draft, made his Whitecaps debut and allowed just two hits in four innings. However, one of those hits was a solo homer by Paul Janish that led off the fourth inning and provided the winning margin for the Dragons.

Matt Righter pitched three innings of relief and gave up just one hit. Dan Konecny was perfect over the last two innings as Whitecaps pitching retired the last 14 Dayton batters of the game.

Steve Young collected both of West Michigan's hits. He singled to center in the fourth to become the first Whitecaps in the game to reach base. Young singled on the infield in the ninth and moved to second with one out on a sacrifice bunt by Jeff Frazier.

Young was also aboard in the sixth when the Whitecaps loaded the bases on a two out walk, followed by back-to-back hit batsmen.

Camilo Vasquez pitched 5.1 innings as the Dayton starter and struck out four with one walk. James Morrison hit the first two batters he faced but retired the next seven batters in a row before Young's single in the ninth. Morrison finished the game to earn his second save.

Snapping the Streak: West Michigan will try to end the five game losing streak with another meeting against Dayton on Tuesday.
