
Chiefs Rout Devil Rays, 16-3

Peoria, IL â The Peoria Chiefs scored 16 runs on 18 hits Monday night, getting runs in each of the first six innings on their way to a 16-3 victory over the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays in front of 2,838 on Veterans Recognition Night at O'Brien Field.
After Southwest Michigan jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Chiefs scored three times in the bottom of the 1st, as Eric Patterson scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a walk to lead off the inning. Luis Montanez hit his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field after Aaron Sisk scored on a Mike Mallory groundout.
The Chiefs added three more in the second after Sam Fuld scored on a Ryan Harvey ground ball in which Sisk beat a throw on a botched force play to second to extend the inning. Mike Mallory followed up with a two-run single to make the score 6-1.
The Devil Rays got two runs in the 3rd inning, before Peoria added a single run in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Josh Arteaga ripped a three-run double into the left-center field gap in the bottom of the 4th before Drew Larsen doubled in the inning to score Arteaga, extending the lead to 11-3.
The Chiefs put up another four-spot in the 5th inning, thanks to another three-run double from Arteaga followed by another Larsen double. All of the damage done by Arteaga and Larsen came against Southwest Michigan reliever Aaron Walker. The Chiefs plated one more in the bottom of the 6th on a Luis Montanez RBI single to set the final score at 16-3.
Chiefs starting pitcher Jesse Estrada settled down after allowing three runs to score in the first three innings to get his second victory of the season. He went seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out one and walked two. Ed Campusano pitched two perfect innings in relief, striking out one. Jino Gonzalez took the loss for Southwest Michigan, his first decision of the year. He gave up six runs in two innings, none of which were earned.

Josh Arteaga (3B) / Luis Montanez (LF) â Arteaga hit a pair of three-run doubles on his way to a 2-for-5 night with six RBI. He also scored three runs. Montanez blasted his fourth home run of the season in the 1st inning with a solo shot. The Chiefs left fielder went 5-for-6 for the game with two RBI and three runs scored.
Notes...
