Burlington Bees News Release

South Bend, IN (May 23, 2005) - The Burlington Bees (19-24) dropped the first of a four-game series 4-2 to the South Bend Silver Hawks (26-18) at Coveleski Stadium tonight. The Bees have lost three games in a row for the third time this year, matching their longest losing streak of the season.

The Bees scored first in the top of the second inning. Rusty Brown drew a two-out walk from starter Steven Jackson and scored when centerfielder Brandon Simon misplayed Eddie Solis' sinking line drive single into extra bases when he was unable to knock the ball down on the short hop and it rolled to the warning track. The lead didn't last long for the Bees though. Mark Reynolds led off the bottom of the third with a solo homer to left field to tie the game.

In the top of the fourth, the Silver Hawks took a 2-1 lead. With one out, Carlos Gonzalez reached on an infield single and went to second on a base hit by Javier Brito. Jereme Milons followed with a bouncing ball to short that might have been an inning-ending double play ball, but Ed Lucas mishandled it for an error to load the bases. Bees' starter Billy Buckner (3-6) then issued his only walk of the game to Reynolds to force in a run. Buckner got out of the inning when Alberto Gonzalez flied to center and Alan Moye threw out Brito at the plate trying to tag up and score.

The Bees retied the game in the top of the fifth. Miguel Vega doubled to right with one out and scored on a two-out double by Geraldo Valentin to right-center. The Bees wouldn't get another hit the rest of the game though as Jackson (4-2) worked through seven innings for the win.

The Silver Hawks went back on top of the fifth on a two-out solo homer by Wilkin Castillo. It was the third time this year that Buckner has allowed two homers in the same game. Buckner (3-6) worked a career-high seven innings, but suffered the loss to tie Alexander Smit of Beloit for the most losses in the Midwest League this year. The Silver Hawks got their final run in the bottom of the eighth against Chad Blackwell. Castillo hit a liner to left that Kenard Springer misplayed for a three-base error. Brito drove him in with a two-out single.

Todd Stein got a walk and a strikeout in a scoreless eighth. Matt Elliott struck out two in the bottom of the ninth and finished the game for his ninth save.

The Bees and Silver Hawks continue this series tomorrow night at 6:30 at Coveleski Stadium RH Luis Cota (2-2, 1.60) will start for the Bees against LH Kellen Raab (2-0, 4.35). The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show staring at 6:10.
