Lexington Legends News Release
Former Lexington Christian and University of Kentucky star Chris Wade had two doubles and a run batted in for Greensboro as the Grasshoppers defeated the Lexington Legends 9-2 Sunday afternoon at Applebee's Park.
Wade, who started the season with advanced-A Jupiter in the Florida State League, was assigned to Greensboro by the parent Florida Marlins. He arrived in Lexington earlier in the day and was in the starting lineup at shortstop. Wade drove in Greensboro's first run with a double in the second inning and also doubled in the fourth inning.
The Grasshoppers broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the third. Leadoff hitter Justin Bass was hit by a pitch. Austin Markel walked, and both runners moved up on a wild pitch by Lexington starter Brandt Walker. Rand Smith singled to score Bass, and Markel came home on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Skipworth to give Greensboro a 3-1 lead. Chad Cregar singled, moving Smith to third. Cregar stole second, and both he and Smith scored on a single to right field by Tom Hickman, who had four RBI in the game.
The Legends came back with one run in the bottom of the third when Miguel Arrendell scored on an infield out by Kody Hinze. The RBI was Hinze's 31st of the year, breaking a tie with teammate J.D. Martinez and giving Hinze the South Atlantic League lead. Lexington also scored a run in the third inning.
Greensboro added to its lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. Smith singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an infield single by Skipworth. Cregar doubled, and after Colton Pitkin replaced Walker on the mound, Hickman doubled to score two more runs and give the Grasshoppers an 8-2 advantage. Greensboro added a final run in the ninth inning on a double by Skipworth and a single by Cregar.
Greensboro starter Matt Montgomery (3-3) got the win. He worked eight innings and allowed six hits and two runs. He struck out three and walked only one. Walker (1-3) was the losing pitcher.
The two teams will close out a four-game series Monday night. Greensboro has won two of the first three games. Game time at Applebee's Park is 7 p.m.
