Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - For the second time in this series the Kannapolis Intimidators starting pitcher had double-digit strikeouts and for the first time in the series the Intimidators won, as they topped the West Virginia Power in a Mother's Day afternoon contest by the score of 4-0.
Matt Wickswat had his best start of the season as he went six innings, allowing just two hits and striking out ten and he picks pup his third win of the season. Wickswat (3-3) has not allowed a run in 10.2 innings and has stuck out 16 over that span. Orlando Santos made his Intimidators (15-16) debut and went two innings, allowing two base runners and striking out four. Garrett Johnson pitched an easy 1-2-3 ninth inning to complete the shutout, the third of the season for the Intimidators.
Nick Ciolli got the scoring started in the third inning with a solo shot, his third home run of the season before Jose Vargas took over the scoring for the remainder of the game. Vargas hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to make it a 3-0 ballgame. Vargas, in his next at-bat, hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot, which landed inside a bull's-eye over the wall in left field.
Melkin Laureano (2-2) started the game and lasted 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits striking out four. Marc Baca pitched 2.1 innings without allowing a run and Ryan Kelly allowed the home run to Vargas.
The Intimidators struck out 15 as a pitching staff for the second time in the series and snapped a two game losing streak. They look to get back to .500 and split the series on Monday at 7:05 as Justin Collop (0-3) goes in search of his first win. Much the same, he will be opposed by Hunter Strickland (0-3).
