Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - Hickory Crawdads starter RHP Joe Wieland (1-2, 3.16 ERA) pitched a solid 7.2 innings to lead the 'Dads past the Greenville Drive, 5-4, before 909 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Mother's Day, Sunday evening. With the win, Hickory maintains its position atop the Northern Division.
Wieland began the game masterfully, not allowing a hit until one out in the top of the fifth when RF Jeremy Hazelbaker singled to right for Greenville (17-14).
The Crawdads (19-12) didn't waste any time getting on the board against Drive starter RHP Yeiper Castillo. With two outs in the bottom of the first, CF Miguel Velazquez singled to center and stole second. DH Vinny Di Fazio followed with a walk before 3B Matt West smashed a double down the left field line to score Velazquez and give Hickory a 1-0 lead.
The 'Dads doubled their lead in the fifth on a two-out solo shot to right by SS Leury Garcia, his second home run of the season, to make it 2-0.
The Drive answered Garcia's home run with a leadoff homer in both the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game. C Dan Butler led off the sixth with a drive to left and 1B Chris McGuiness led off the seventh by hitting one to right.
Hickory reclaimed the lead in the seventh on a three-run bomb by LF Jared Prince. C Leonel De Los Santos led off the inning against reliever RHP Ryan Pressly (0-3, 4.76 ERA) with a bloop single to center. SS Leury Garcia reached on a fielding error by 3B Michael Almanzar and Prince followed with his blast to left to put the 'Dads up, 5-2.
With two outs in the eighth and a runner on first, Greenville rallied for two runs (one earned) against Wieland and releiver RHP Josh Lueke before Lueke picked up the final out of the inning. Lueke returned to the mound for a 1-2-3 ninth to record his league-leading ninth save. Wieland got his first win of the season for the Crawdads and Pressly was tagged with the loss.
