Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - It's unclear whether or not Lady Luck is a Mother, but the Augusta GreenJackets were glad to have her on their sides in a 6-5 win over the Hagerstown Suns on Mother's Day at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

With a runner at first and one out in the first inning of a scoreless tie, Chris Dominguez's would-be double play grounder hit the leg of the base umpire. Hagerstown had turned two after the deflection but once the ball hits an umpire it becomes a dead ball, giving Dominguez a hit and placing both runners on the bases. Later in the inning, the Jackets took advantage of their good fortune on Luke Anders' two-run single to give the GreenJackets the early lead.

Hagerstown tied the game with runs in each the second and third innings. Destin Hood's single cut the lead in half in the second while Eury Perez scored from second base on a ball booted by Anders to tie things an inning later.

The GreenJackets retook the lead in unusual fashion in the sixth on a double steal with Evan Crawford at the plate. Though Crawford struck out, Suns catcher Adrian Nieto elected to throw to second and try to catch the back runner stealing. The throw ended up in center field to score Ryan Lollis from third and then after the ball was booted in center, Juan Martinez was also able to score.

Augusta added two more in the eighth on a pair of two-out hits. Sharlon Schoop tripled off the right field wall to bring in a run and later Schoop would score on Lollis' bloop double to right, bringing the lead to four. The Suns struck back to score three times in the eighth and had the tying run on second before Jason Jarvis came out of the bullpen to slam the door shut in the inning. He set the Suns down in order an inning later to pick up his seventh save of the year.

Jorge Bucardo threw five solid innings, allowing just two runs - one earned - on three hits with seven strikeouts. His five walks were the biggest reason he departed without a decision after five innings. Jose Valdez (3-1) got the win with two scoreless innings of two-hit relief. Kyle Morrison (1-1) took the loss by yielding four runs in his two innings of work.

The GreenJackets will try to take three of four from the Suns and split the season series at four games apiece in the series and homestand finale on Monday night. BJ Salsbury (3-2, 5.13) gets the ball for the GreenJackets and will face Dan Rosenbaum (1-1, 2.45). First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
