Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release
Greensboro, NC (April 29, 2009) - The Greensboro Grasshoppers were held to just a run on three hits over the first five innings of Wednesday afternoon's game against the West Virginia Power, but put together back-to-back three run innings in the sixth and seventh to erase an early deficit and took the series finale at NewBridge Bank Park with a 7-2 victory.
Quincy Latimore ripped his third triple of the season with one out in the top of the second inning, and scored the game's first run on Greg Picart's Sacrifice Fly. Calvin Anderson delivered a clutch, two-out opposite field double in the third inning to score Robbie Grossman, making it a 2-0 Power lead.
The Grasshoppers cut that lead in half in the bottom of the fourth on Ben Lasater's first RBI double of the game. Jeremy Synan gave Greensboro the lead for good on a towering three-run homer in the sixth inning which went over the scoreboard in right-center field. Kevin Mattison hit a two-run shot in the seventh inning and Lasater drove in the game's final run later in the seventh with another run scoring two-bagger.
Jose Rosario (2-0) allowed just a pair of runs on six hits over six innings to score the victory for Greensboro, while Daniel Jennings and Brandon Todd held the Power hitless and scoreless over three innings of relief. Yoffri Martinez (0-2) was tagged for three runs on three hits in an inning of work and suffered the loss. Maurice Bankston started the game for the Power and pitched well, surrendering just a run on three hits in five innings of work. West Virginia was held without a hit over the final five innings.
West Virginia fell to 6-14 with the loss and the Grasshoppers improved to 11-9 after the victory. Chase D'Arnaud went 0-for-4, bringing his hitting streak to an end at seven games and his on base streak at 13 games. Robbie Grossman went 1-for-3 with a single and a walk, reaching base for the 11th game in a row, and he has reached multiple times over the past five games.
West Virginia will begin a four game series with the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night. Left hander Tyler Cox (0-2, 11.08) will start for West Virginia. The Suns starting pitcher has not been announced. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
