Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

SALISBURY, MD - The Lakewood BlueClaws lost their first series on the road this season as they dropped the rubber match of a three game series at the Delmarva Shorebirds by the score of 8-1. The loss drops the BlueClaws (11-8) a full game behind the Shorebirds (11-6), two days after being in first place by themselves for the first time this season.

BlueClaws starting pitcher Jesus Sanchez (1-2), in his fourth professional start, struggled for the second time against the Shorebirds after back-to-back strong performances. In the first inning, Sanchez got the first two hitters to ground out before Ron Welty singled and was then brought home after stealing a base by Jose Mahoney.

His trouble continued in the second inning, again with two outs as Kyle Hudson walked, followed by a single by LJ Hoes and a two-run double off the bat of Ron Welty. Sanchez would then be lifted after working a perfect third in favor of Jacob Diekman.

Despite there being a new pitcher, Diekman had similar problems dealing with the Shorebirds lineup. In the fourth inning, Diekman allowed another two runs with two outs in the inning as the BlueClaws struggled to find the inning ender all game long.

With the score 5-0 the BlueClaws tried to provide some resistance as D'Arby Myers tripled in the sixth and was then brought home on a Travis d'Arnaud sacrifice fly.

The BlueClaws comeback hopes were dashed in the bottom of the seventh as Santo Hernandez came in to pitch and struggled, allowing three more runs to make it an 8-1 ballgame.

Esmelvin Jiminez came in and pitched a clean inning in the eighth. Overall, the Shorebirds had a season- high 18 hits in the game.

Cole McCurry (1-0) began the game for the Shorebirds on the mound and pitched very well in 5.2 innings of work. He picked up his first win of the season, giving up six hits while striking out four and allowing just one run. He was relieved in the sixth inning by Raul Rivero who pitched 2.1 innings and only allowed one baserunner. Pat Egan closed the game out as he pitched the ninth inning.

The BlueClaws, on the heels of a two game losing streak will travel to Hickory for their first games of the season against the Crawdads for the first of a four game series on Thursday at 7:05pm. The BlueClaws will look to Jon Velasquez (4-0) to turn things around and the Crawdads will counter with lefty Richard Bleier (2-0).
