TRAVERSE CITY, MI- The Traverse City Beach Bums got a great starting pitching performance from Scott Dunn and first baseman Jeff Flagg hit a grand slam as they shutout the Joliet Slammers in front of 4,143 fans at Wuerfel Park by a score of 10-0.
Dunn (4-2), starting for the first time since becoming a Beach Bum prior to the 2010 season, pitched an impressive seven scoreless innings in picking up his fourth win of the season. The seven innings were nearly twice as long as the longest appearance Dunn had this season after going 4.1 innings in a 6-2 victory on July 17 against Windy City.
Traverse City did all of their damage in the third and fifth innings of the contest. In the third, the Beach Bums scored four times with the benefit of only one base hit. Joliet starting pitcher Ryne Miller walked two batters, hit two batters and threw a wild pitch as the Beach Bums jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
In the fifth, Traverse City would strike for six more runs as they took advantage of Miller's continued wildness. Miller walked three more batters, and eventually allowed a two-run single to shortstop Jose Vargas with the bases loaded to give the Beach Bums a 6-0 lead. Two batters later, Flagg sent a towering fly ball down the left field line on the first pitch he saw from Miller just out of the reach of Slammers left fielder David Fox for the third Beach Bums grand slam this season. Left fielder J.T. Hall has the other two in 2011.
Miller (0-4) allowed all 10 Traverse City runs in suffering his fourth loss of the season. With the win, the Beach Bums improve to 31-29, while the Slammers fall to 33-26 on the season. The Beach Bums are now just 2.5 games back of the Slammers for first place in the Frontier League East Division.
The Beach Bums hit the road for a three-game series with the Windy City Thunderbolts beginning Wednesday night at 8:05 p.m. Left hander Bryan Banes makes the start for the Beach Bums on the mound, while lefty John Mincone, normally a relief pitcher, gets the start for Windy City.
