RiverHawks snap skid with 3-2 win

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks snapped the worst losing streak in their history with a 3-2 win over the Windy City ThunderBolts on Tuesday at Road Ranger Stadium.
Kevin Smith had two hits, including a home run, as the RiverHawks ended a nine-game skid. Rockford salvaged the finale of a three-game series and ended the ThunderBolts' six-game winning streak.
Rockford never trailed. Jake Eigsti singled in a run in the first inning and Smith hit a two-run homer in the fourth.
Windy City got on the board in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Mike Torres. Larry Pempek cut Rockford's lead to a run with a RBI single in the seventh, but the ThunderBolts left five on base - three of them in scoring position - over the last three innings.
Rockford starter Brett Scarpetta (5-3) held the `Bolts to two runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings and got the win. Windy City starter Bryant Cotton (5-5) lasted six innings and took the loss. Brett Durand got the last four outs and picked up his 12th save.
The RiverHawks open a three-game series at Washington at 5:35 p.m. CDT Wednesday. The game will be aired live on ESPN 1380.
The RiverHawks' next home game is 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2 against Southern Illinois. Petco sponsors Dog Days of Summer. Fans are invited to bring their pooch to the park.
