Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Frederick, MD - Frederick's stagnant offense received a jolt of life from Brandon Waring, who belted a grand slam in the fifth inning to lift the Keys over Winston-Salem 5-3 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Harry Grove Stadium. Frederick trailed 2-1 in the fifth and on the verge of being swept after scoring one run in the first games of the series before Waring bashed his 22nd home run of the season, which trails only Cody Johnson of Myrtle Beach with 27 for the league-lead.
The Dash snapped a scoreless game with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning against Keys starter Sean Gleason. Brent Morel led off with a double and Seth Loman struck out, but a wild pitch allowed him to reach first base safely and advanced Morel to third with no outs. Justin Greene followed with an infield single that plated Morel with his league-leading 74th run scored. After John Curtis walked to load the bases, Kent Gerst tallied an RBI ground out to give the Dash a 2-0 lead.
The Keys trimmed their deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth when Wally Crancer lined an RBI single off Jacob Rasner. Frederick's decisive fifth inning began harmlessly as Bobby Stevens led off with a single, but Billy Killian grounded into a double-play to leave the bases empty with two outs. But Matt Angle and Pedro Florimon connected on back-to-back singles and Bobbie Widlansky walked to load the bases. Waring followed with a blast to straightaway center field to put Frederick in front 5-2. Waring also paces the league with 81 RBI and 58 extra-base hits.
Winston-Salem added a run in the sixth inning on a Sergio Morales RBI sacrifice fly, but failed to muster a rally against the Keys bullpen which kept the Dash scoreless over the final three frames. Eddy Gamboa surrendered an unearned run over three innings of relief and Brandon Cooney worked a perfect ninth for his third save of the season.
Gleason (4-6) battled through five innings and held the Dash to two runs on two hits. He walked four, but still garnered the win. Rasner (3-5) lasted five innings and surrendered five runs on eight hits to suffer his fifth loss in his last six starts.
The Dash off on Monday before they return to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Tuesday, August 18 when they open a four-game, three-day series with a doubleheader against the Potomac Nationals. The first pitch of the opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. For more information on all the upcoming promotions or to purchase single-game tickets, visit www.wsdash.com or by call the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
