Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA - Lynchburg Hillcats starter Justin Wilson went seven dominant innings, and Harrison Bishop followed him with two more to close the door as the Hillcats salvaged the last of three against the Pelicans at Calvin Falwell Field with a 3-0 victory Sunday.
The Hillcats got on the board in the run category before they broke into the hit column in a shaky bottom of the first for Pelicans starter Erik Cordier. In back-to-back at-bats, Cordier hit Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer with pitches and issued a walk to Jamie Romak. Matt Hague scored Harrison with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to put the Hillcats up 1-0.
That run would be all the Hillcats would eventually need, but two innings later, Lynchburg added a pair, again behind the top part of the order. Harrison walked with one out, scoring on Mercer's RBI double. After Cordier plunked Romak, the right-hander uncorked a wild pitch, moving the runners to second and third. Mercer scored on a Hague RBI groundout. Cordier (6-6) went six innings and was charged with all three runs on three Hillcats hits. He struck out three, walked three, hit three batters and threw two wild pitches in his second consecutive defeat following two straight wins.
Wilson was the day's story, however, helping his team bounce back from consecutive losses to open the set. The Pelicans had at least one base runner in three of the first four innings, but time after time, Wilson (6-7) wriggled out of trouble while striking out a season-high eleven batters and not walking a man. Myrtle Beach's five hits over seven innings netted nothing offensively in the Birds' first shutout loss since August 1 against Kinston. Donell Linares continued to swing a scorching hot bat for the Pelicans, however, going 2-for-4 in the series finale. The Havana, Cuba native batted .750 (9-for-12) for the series with a home run and seven runs batted in to boost his season average to .290.
Bishop (2) entered in the eighth and struck out one over two perfect innings.
The Pelicans are off tomorrow before opening a four-game, three-day series visiting the Kinston Indians beginning with a Tuesday doubleheader starting at 6:05. Myrtle Beach returns home Friday for a seven-game homestand beginning with a three-game weekend set with the Frederick Keys. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
