Game #116/Road #60
TODAY: The Potomac Nationals can claim first place in the Northern Division with a sweep of the division rival Wilmington Blue Rocks from Frawley Stadium in an afternoon tilt beginning at 1:35 p.m. The P-Nats won their fourth series of the year against the Blue Crew and now stand just a half game back of the Rocks for the final playoff spot in the North. Yesterday's win marked the first time that Potomac won consecutive games in the month of August as the team initially struggled in the final full month of the â09 season. The Nats are just 5-8 in August after going 21-8 in July.
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: LHP Michael Montgomery, 20, was a 1st round supplemental (36th overall) pick of the Kansas City Royals during the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Newhall (CA) High School. A former two-sport star in high school, Montgomery entered the 2009 campaign as the #4 rated prospect in the Royals organization and with the recent trade of RHP Dan Cortes to the Mariners, Montgomery becomes Kansas City's top ranked hurler. The southpaw began his professional career last season with the Rookie Arizona League Royals where he dominated the competition to the tune of a 2-1 record and a 1.68 ERA in 12 games (9 starts). He struck out 34 opposed to just 12 walks in 43.0 IP and was ranked as the top prospect in the AZL.
In 12 starts with Low-A Burlington in â09, Montgomery held opponents to a .206 batting average against and went 2-3 with a 2.17 ERA. Wilmington received this talented lefty on July 22nd and in his first two starts with the Rocks, Montgomery allowed three earned runs in 9.0 IP with eight strikeouts and six walks against Carolina League competition. He saved his most dominating performance in the CL to date against Potomac on August 6th where the southpaw twirled seven innings and struck out a season-best seven batters in a 5-1 win from Pfitzner Stadium. Lefties are hitting just .136 against him.
