Indians Take Seventh Straight from Red Sox and Win Season Series 11-9

Salem, VA (August 16, 2009) - For the second straight day, an early 1-0 lead for the Red Sox made little difference as Kinston rolled to an easy 7-2 victory to sweep the weekend series at Lewis-Gale Field. The Indians knocked Seth Garrison out after just two and a third innings, his shortest outing of the season, and continued their recent dominance of the Red Sox. With the victory, Kinston usurps Salem's position as the leader in the wild card hunt, jumping over the Sox by a half game in the second-half standings.

A pair of three-run innings and a single tally in the third would be more than enough run support for Paulo Espino, whose only blemish to his six spectacular innings was an unearned run in the first. Espino retired the final 14 batters he faced and only allowed two hits on the day to pick up his fifth win on the year. Santo Frias retired six of the seven batters he faced in two scoreless innings of relief, and though Garrison Campfield flirted with danger in the ninth, he only allowed one run and he struck out Zach Borowiak with the bases loaded to prevent the tying run from coming to the plate.

Kinston stranded a pair of runners in a scoreless top of the first, but the Indians would send eight men to the plate in a three-run second against Garrison. Using three hits, two walks, and a costly error by Borowiak, the Indians took a 3-1 lead. Only one of the runs was earned, but Garrison's troubles would continue into the third. After Doug Pickens grounded out to begin the frame, three consecutive singles made it 4-1 and sent Garrison to the showers. Robert Coello entered and stranded the two inherited runners to keep the 4-1 game.

Although the Indians had left six runners on base through three innings and only led by three, the Red Sox offense remain stifled. One day after 19 straight were set down in the middle of the game, the Sox had 18 in a row retired by Espino and Frias before Borowiak was hit by a pitch with one out in the eighth. Salem mustered just two hits over the first eight innings and four for the game. Tim Federowicz went 2-4, while Che-Hsuan Lin and Mike Jones each tallied a single.

Coello performed well for Salem, eating up innings and throwing two and a third scoreless frames in relief of Garrison. But pitching into the sixth inning, Coello was finally tagged for a few runs. He surrendered back-to-back doubles to Lucas Montero and Tim Fedroff, walked Cord Phelps, and gave up a single to Ole Sheldon. With one out, Jason Rice entered and struck out Pickens before Davis singled in another run to make it 7-1. Rice, Josh Papelbon, and Derrick Loop combined to throw three and two thirds scoreless innings out of the Salem pen, but the lack of punch from the lineup prevented Salem from closing the gap.

Following an off-day on Monday, the Red Sox remain at Lewis-Gale Field and open a three-game set with the Lynchburg Hillcats. Kyle Weiland is set to tangle with Rudy Owens in the series opener, scheduled for Tuesday at 7:05.
