Altoona Curve News Release

MANCHESTER, NH- The Altoona Curve managed just four hits in being shut out by the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 5-0, Saturday evening at Fisher Cats Ballpark in Manchester, NH.

Right-hander Jamie Vermilyea (3-2), who has spent most the season pitching out of the New Hampshire bullpen, improved his season ERA to 2.05 after holding the Curve off the board on four hits over seven innings of work to earn the win. Vermilyea scattered four singles to Curve hitters before turning the game over to reliever Tracy Thorpe, who closed out the shutout with two scoreless frames.

Tom Gorzelanny (4-3) gave up all five New Hampshire runs over his 4 2/3 innings to suffer the loss. The lefty, who tossed a three-hit shutout against New Britain in his last start Sunday at Blair County Ballpark, gave up single runs in the second and third innings before getting tagged for three runs by the Fisher Cats in the fourth. Overall, Gorzelanny yielded five runs-four earned-on seven hits, walking two and striking out five.

Rajai Davis, Gregg Raymundo, Josh Bonifay and Ray Sadler collected the four Curve hits as Altoona was shut out for just the third time this season. Raymundo collected his hit after entering the game in the bottom of the fourth for Jose Bautista, who left the game with an apparent injury after flying out in the top of the fourth.

The Curve (43-37), who entered the game with just a ½ game lead over second-place Erie in the E.L. South, lost their second straight to the Fisher Cats (42-38) and will look to avoid a three-game sweep in the final game of the series Sunday afternoon. Altoona will send right-hander Eddie Candelario (0-0, 13.50) to the mound to square off against New Hampshire lefty Zach Jackson (2-2, 3.75) in the 1:05 PM series finale at Fisher Cats Ballpark.
