Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Three Runs Not Enough Last night, the Binghamton Mets blew a 3-0 lead, falling to the Akron Aeros 4-3 in 11innings in the first game of a three-game series at Canal Park. Ryan Mulhern's double scored Franklin Gutierrez to win it for the Aeros, who snapped their 12-game losing streak. Brett Harper hit his second homer in as many days and Victor Hall drove in two with a triple for the B-Mets, who had their two-game win streak snapped.

Streak Busters The 12-game losing streak ended by Akron last night was the longest in the Eastern League this year. The B-Mets also ended the EL's longest winning streak in 2005 when they beat Portland April 18th, snapping their season-opening 10-game win streak.

See, Wha' Had Happen Was... The B-Mets set a season high committing five errors, one of which allowed Akron to score the game's tying run in the eighth. Binghamton's committed 12 errors in their last four games, leading to eight unearned runs. The B-Mets have committed 100 errors in 76 games, leading the Eastern League.

Who Are These Guys? With new additions Harper starting his first game for the B-Mets at first base and Corey Ragsdale doing the same at shortstop, the pair became the first position players this year to start for Binghamton who weren't on the club's Opening Day roster. Prior to Harper and Ragsdale, the previous four players added to the B-Mets this season (Jose Rodriguez, Rafael Lopez, Anderson Garcia and Ivan Maldonado) were all pitchers.

(Not So) Good To See You Last night, former B-Met Jose Diaz (2004) hurled three scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Akron, making him the third former B-Mets pitcher to face his old team this season. Altoona's Matt Peterson (2004) beat the B-Mets on June 8th and Akron's Billy Traber (2001) lost at NYSEG Stadium in the second game of a doubleheader May 4th. Akron also has former B-Mets catcher Javier Cardona (2004) on its roster.

On The Mound RHP Bryan Edwards (2-2, 3.35) Last Time Out: Wed. vs. NB (ND, relief): 2 IP, 2 R, ER, 3 H, 0 BB, K (W 10-6)...Bryan pitched the eighth and ninth Wednesday, allowing both runs in his first inning of work. Three errors were committed behind Bryan in his two innings of work, with Binghamton committing four errors on the night.

This Season: Tonight, Bryan will get his second spot start of the season and make his 24th appearance, replacing the injured Kevin Deaton in the rotation. He's expected to get 65-70 pitches. The righthander has given up runs in three of his last four relief appearances, posting an 11.05 ERA during that stretch (7 1/3 IP, 9 ER). After going 1-0 with a 1.75 ERA in 15 appearances in April and May, Bryan was 1-2 with an 8.03 ERA in eight June outings. Against Akron: Bryan's first spot start of the year came against the Aeros at NYSEG Stadium May 31st. He lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks, striking out two in a 6-2 B-Mets win. Both runs scored on a two-run double off the bat of Shaun Larkin in the third. Edwards left the game after walking Ivan Ochoa with two out in the fifth, finishing one out shy of qualifying for a win. Bryan threw 64 pitches. 2005 vs. AKR: 0-0, 3.27, 3 G, GS, 11 IP, 10 H, 5 BB, 5 K.

Background: The righthander is in his second season in the Mets organization, making two appearances, including a start, with the B-Mets in 2004. In seven starts between Binghamton and High-A St. Lucie last season, Bryan was 2-3 with a 2.31 ERA. Bryan was in the San Diego chain in 2003 before being selected by the Mets in the Rule Five Draft. Bryan was originally drafted by Cincinnati in the ninth round of the 2000 draft out of Northeast Texas Community College.
