New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Manchester, NH -Jamie Vermilyea pitched seven scoreless innings, and Erik Kratz belted his team-leading ninth home run as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats blanked the Altoona Curve, 5-0, Saturday afternoon at Fisher Cats Ballpark.

Vermilyea (3-2) scattered four singles over seven innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. In three starts, Vermilyea is 2-0 and has allowed only one run in 18 innings for an 0.50 ERA.

Reliever Tracy Thorpe pitched two hitless innings to close it out for New Hampshire (42-38), which shut out an opponent for the first time since Shaun Marcum and Cam Reimers pitched back-to-back complete-game shutouts during a doubleheader sweep of New Britain on May 8.

Altoona (43-37) did not have a runner reach second base and was shut out for the first time since May 24.

Kratz (2-for-3, HR, double, RBI, 2 R) hit an opposite-field home run off Altoona starter and losing pitcher Tom Gorzelanny (4-3) in the bottom of the second inning. Gorzelanny allowed five runs -four earned- in 4.2 innings. He allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out five.

Clint Johnston (1-for-3, RBI) extended his hitting streak to a club season-high 12 games with a run-scoring single that plated Ron Acuna in the bottom of the third inning for a 2-0 lead. Acuna reached base when Curve rightfielder Rich Thompson dropped his fly ball with one out.

The Fisher Cats scored three more times in the bottom of the fourth inning. Maikel Jova singled, Kratz doubled and Ron Davenport singled against the drawn-in infield to score Jova. Brad Hassey brought home Kratz with a sacrifice fly to right, and Acuna added a bloop single to score Davenport.

The Fisher Cats, who will win their first series since June 3-5 vs Norwich, go for the three-game sweep Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm. Left-hander Zach Jackson (2-2, 3.75) pitches against right-hander Eddie Candelario (0-0, 13.50). The first 1,500 fans through the gates at Fisher Cats Ballpark will receive free Fisher Cats Baseball Hats. For ticket information, call (603) 641-2005 or visit www.nhfishercats.com. The game can be heard on the Fisher Cats Radio Network (WKBR-1250 AM; WKXL 1450 AM) beginning at 12:55pm with Mike Murphy.
