Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Gorillas had their brief two game winning streak snapped on Saturday night, losing to the Arizona Sundogs by a final score of 8-3. Amarillo would never lead in a game controlled by the Sundogs offense, and supported by the strong goaltending of Arizona's Robert McVicar. Amarillo trailed in the contest for all but eight minutes of the game, and despite out-shooting Arizona 46-30 they lost their 28th game of the year. The Gorillas are now 3-3-0 on the year against Arizona, and have two more games next weekend against the Sundogs on Friday and Saturday night in Prescott Valley.
Alex Leavitt, the CHL's leading scorer would rack up two goals and two assists in the contest, while defenseman Dan Laperriere pitched in with a pair of goals and an assist as well. The Gorillas top offensive producers were Austin Sutter with two goals, and Bill Vandermeer who had three assists in the contest.
The Gorillas power-play continued to play well, going 2-8 on the night, while limiting the Sundogs to 1-5. Arizona came into the game as the top power-play unit in the CHL, clicking at over 25%.
For the third straight game, Amarillo would make a mid-game goaltending change, but unlike the last two nights the change did not give the Gorillas the spark they needed for a comeback. Dan McWhinney started between the pipes giving up seven goals on 25 shots before being replaced at the 47:35 mark. Dan Bauer would give up one goal on five shots to finish out the game, while their counterpart Robert McVicar would rack up 43 saves on 46 shots faced, including multiple highlight-reel saves in the first period that would keep Amarillo off the scoreboards early.
The Gorillas are back in action next week, with a home game on Tuesday night against Tulsa starting at 7:05 PM at the Amarillo Civic Center. Then they travel to Arizona for two games against the Sundogs on Friday and Saturday night.
