Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - Omaha Royals outfielder Alex Gordon is one of six Triple-A sluggers set to compete in the annual Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby. The event is scheduled for Monday, July 12 at 6 p.m. CDT at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It is being held in conjunction with the 2010 Triple-A All-Star Game, which takes place on Wednesday, July 14 at the same ballpark, home of the International League's Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
Gordon has hit 12 home runs in 59 games with Omaha. Joining Gordon as participants from the Pacific Coast League are catcher J.P. Arencibia of Las Vegas, tied for the PCL lead with 22 homers, and Albuquerque outfielder Jay Gibbons, who has 12 round-trippers.
Home Run Derby participants from the IL include former University of Nebraska star Dan Johnson, who plays first, third and left field for Durham and leads the Triple-A ranks with 23 home runs. The others are Toledo fist baseman/outfielder Jeff Frazier, who has hit 16 bombs and Lehigh Valley first baseman Andy Tracy, with 12 homers so far this season. Tracy has the most pro career home runs (282) and the highest single season total (37 in 1999) of any of the six participants.
Two Lehigh Valley-area high school players who qualified through preliminaries earlier this season at Coca-Cola Park will join the Triple-A players in the competition.
PCL sluggers have won the last two Home Run Derbies. At last year's event, hometown favorite Chad Huffman of Portland got by Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Shelley Duncan in the finals.
The Triple-A All-Star Game next Wednesday will be televised live on MLB Network. It will also be broadcast on Omaha's KOIL AM-1180 and at www.oroyals.com, beginning at 6:00 p.m. CDT.
The Royals' next home game at Rosenblatt is tonight at 7:05 p.m., when Omaha opens a five-game series vs. the Albuquerque Isotopes.
