Iowa Cubs News Release

Casey Coleman (8-7, 4.09) was brilliant for Iowa, allowing a single run and scattering four hits over seven innings as the Cubs beat New Orleans 4-1 Thursday night at Principal Park.

The young right-hander struck out six and walked two, tying his season-high in innings and his season-low in runs. With his eighth win of the season, Coleman now leads all Iowa pitchers in wins.

Zephyrs' starter Tom "Mr. Nasty" Mastny (2-1, 2.12) and Coleman engaged in a pitching duel through four innings with each team only combining for three hits. Iowa finally got to Mastny to begin the fifth inning that started with a Bobby Scales' double, his 20th of the season. After Bryan LaHair was retired on a fly out, Welington Castillo singled and on a heads-up baserunning play, moved to second as the throw went to the catcher. Matt Camp was then intentionally walked to load the bases to bring up Coleman.

Coleman, who entered the game batting .316 (6-for-19), flied out to left-fielder Bryan Petersen on a ball that was too shallow to bring in Scales. Jim Adduci then delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single that plated Scales and Castillo. Darwin Barney followed with an RBI-single of his own to bring in Camp as the Cubs took a 3-0 lead.

Mastny suffered his first loss of the season for the Zephyrs, giving up a season-high three runs.

The Cubs continued to swing the bats well in July and collected 10 hits in win. The team has now recorded 10 or more hits in eight of their last 12 games. The top of the order led Iowa tonight with Adduci finishing the game 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Barney also finished with two hits and an RBI.

Iowa added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh and Blake Parker pitched two innings of scoreless relief to get his second save of the season.

The Cubs and Zephyrs will be back at it Friday night with a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. RH Rick VandenHurk (4-4, 5.96) will start for New Orleans and will oppose Cubs righty Hung-Wen Chen (0-0, 4.50) who is making his Triple-A debut.
