New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Manchester, NH- Rei Gonzalez pitched 8.2 innings of shutout baseball, but Mike Mooney's two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Connecticut Defenders to a 2-0 triumph over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in front of a crowd of 1,967 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Tuesday night.

Gonzalez was masterful for New Hampshire (3-3), scattering five hits and striking out four during his gem. The right-hander, who leads the Eastern League in innings pitched (14.2), retired 14 consecutive batters at one point. He departed a scoreless game with two outs in the ninth and no one on base.

Connecticut (4-2) immediately took advantage of Gonzalez's departure when Adam Witter (2-for-4) singled off losing pitcher Rommie Lewis (0-1). Brett Pill (1-for-4, R) singled off Zach Dials, allowing pinch-runner Antoan Richardson to go to third base. After Pill took second base on defensive indifference, Andrew D'Alessio was intentionally walked to load the bases. Mooney then lined Dials' 2-2 pitch down the right field line, driving in Richardson and Pill for a 2-0 lead.

The Fisher Cats fought back in the bottom of the ninth inning with two-out singles from Kyle Phillips (2-for-3, BB) and Nick Gorneault (1-for-3, BB), but Daniel Otero struck out Sean Shoffit (0-for-4) to notch his second save in as many chances.

Joe Paterson (1-0) earned the victory with 1.2 innings of perfect relief.

The Fisher Cats look to avoid the sweep Wednesday night at 6:35pm when left-hander Fabio Castro (1-0, 0.00) takes the mound against Defenders' right-hander Brooks McNiven (0-0, 2.45). The BayRing Communications Pre-Game Show begins at 6:15pm with Mike Murphy and Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.

Wednesday night is Indian Head Athletics Scholar Athlete Night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. For tickets, call (603) 641-2005 or visit www.nhfishercats.com.
