Altoona Curve News Release
The Akron Aeros handed the Altoona Curve their fifth straight loss to start the 2009 Eastern League season on Monday night at Canal Park as the Aeros scored three unanswered runs to erase a 6-4 deficit in a 7-6 win over the Curve.
With the Curve leading 6-4, John Drennan led off the sixth inning with a walk off losing pitcher Eric Krebs (0-2). Jared Head was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Josh Rodriguez moved the runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt. With one out and runners at second and third, Krebs uncorked a wild-pitch scoring Drennan to make it 6-5. Carlos Rivero tied the game at six with a run scoring single to left.
With the game tied at six, Mickey Hall drew a one out walk off Krebs. Hall went to second on a wild pitch. Niuman Romero slapped a single to right, moving Hall to third base. Hall scored when the throw from RF Brad Corley hit off the glove of Curve 1B Hector Gimenez and bounced behind home plate., giving the Aeros a 7-6 lead.
That was enough for right-hander Randy Newsom (1-0), who surrendered a hit in 1 1/3 innings of work. Vinnie Pestano pitched a scoreless ninth inning to nail down his second save of the season.
Jamie Romack went 2-5 with a homer while Brad Corley chipped in with two hits and a RBI of his own to pace the Curve attack. The Curve left fourteen runners on base, including eight in scoring position.
The Curve will try to snap their five game losing streak in the middle game of the three game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 EDT. Left-hander Tony Watson (0-0 12.27) toes the rubber for the Curve. Akron will counter with righty Hector Randon (1-0 1.59).
