
Gonzalez Allows One Hit over Six Innings in 5-1 Win

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (27-29, 67-59) are back in the win column with a 5-1 win over the Somerset Patriots (34-22, 76-48) on Saturday afternoon.
Wikelman Gonzalez spun 6.0 scoreless innings allowing one walk while striking out six. The first and only hit against Gonzalez didn't come until the top of the sixth. Ryan Zeferjahn pitched 2.0 innings in relief before Luis Guerrero fired a perfect ninth with a strikeout. Alex Erro launched his first Double-A home run in the bottom of the fifth while also going two-for-three on the day. Tyler McDonough recorded his second multi-hit game in as many days going two-for-three with a pair of RBI while Alex Binelas also went two-for-three with a walk.
Portland got on the board first in the bottom of the first to take the 1-0 lead. Corey Rosier reached on a walk before stealing second (48) and advancing to third on an error by the catcher, Ben Rice. Rosier would then score on a sacrifice fly from McDonough.
McDonough continued the scoring in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to record his second RBI of the day before an RBI single from Nathan Hickey would extend the 3-0 lead.
Erro launched his first homer at the Double-A level in the bottom of the fifth. The leadoff solo shot made it 4-0 Sea Dogs.
Tyler Esplin grounded into a force out in the bottom of the sixth to score Phillip Sikes.
Mickey Gasper would put Somerset on the board in the top of the seventh with an RBI double but Portland led 5-1.
Portland starter RHP Wikelman Gonzalez (3-1, 2.45 ERA) earned the win after pitching 6.0 scoreless innings allowing one hit while walking one and striking out five. The loss was issued to Somerset starter RHP Blane Abeyta (8-7, 5.71 ERA) after pitching 5.2 innings allowing five runs on seven hits while walking four and striking three.
The Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field tomorrow, September 3rd, 2023 for the final game of a six-game series against the Somerset Patriots. First pitch for game six is slated for 1:00pm. Portland will start RHP Hunter Dobbins (4-5, 4.47 ERA) while Somerset will give the ball to RHP Yoendrys Gomez (0-2, 3.14 ERA).
