Gomez and Ludwick power Toledo past Indianapolis 7-3

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Left fielder Alexis Gomez and right fielder Ryan Ludwick combined to go 6-for-8 with four doubles, one homer, three RBI and five runs as Toledo cruised to a 7-3 win over Indianapolis Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field.
Gomez turned in a 3-for-4 effort with doubles in the first, third and fifth frames, while Ludwick went 3-for-4 with a first-inning single, third-inning double and fifth-inning homer.
The Mud Hens improve to 71-61 on the season, while the Indians see their five-game winning streak come to an end and fall to 72-60 overall. Indianapolis continues to lead the International League's West Division by one game over Toledo.
Toledo cracked the scoreboard in the first when Gomez smashed a double to center and came plateward on Ludwick's single to right.
The Mud Hens added a run in the second and two more in the third. 3B Mike Hessman whacked his 22nd long ball of the season -- a solo shot to left -- in the second. Gomez and Ludwick then belted back-to-back doubles in the third before Ludwick trotted home on 1B Chris Shelton's sacrifice fly to left.
Toledo's advantage grew to seven with a three spot in the fifth. The frame was highlighted by Ludwick's team-leading 26th dinger of the campaign -- a two-run job to right center -- and back-to-back doubles by Shelton and 2B Jack Hannahan.
The home team collected 12 base knocks on the night, including seven doubles and a pair of home runs. The seven two baggers tied a Fifth Third Field record.
Toledo RHP Jordan Tata (7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO) picked up the win, improving to 10-6. He recorded 1-2-3 innings in the first, second, third and fifth. Mud Hens RHP Chris Spurling (2.0 IP, 1 SO) ended the Tribe's eighth-inning rally and breezed through the ninth for his fifth save.
RHP Matt Ginter (4.2 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 2-4 with Indianapolis and 5-13 overall.
Indianapolis scored all three of its runs in the eighth on RF Adam Boeve's sixth home run of the campaign -- a shot to dead center. It was Boeve's first long ball on the road in 38 tilts this season.
The two clubs wrap up their brief two-game series Thursday night at 7 p.m. RHP John Van Benschoten is slated to start for Indianapolis, while RHP Brian Boehringer is expected to get the nod for Toledo.
The game will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Thursday's pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
