How the West Will be Won - IL Tie Breaker Scenarios

Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Toledo Mud Hens and Fifth Third Field will likely host any tie-breaker games for the International League West if needed, following the conclusion of the 2006 regular season.

The Mud Hens (70-61 as of August 23) trail the Indianapolis Indians (72-59) by two games in the division race and are one game ahead of the Louisville Bats (69-62) for second place.

In the likelihood that Toledo ties with either of those two teams atop the division standings at the end of the season, a one game playoff will likely occur at Fifth Third Field to determine who will advance to the Governors' Cup Playoffs.

The host city of the one-game playoff is determined on the basis of which team has the better record in head-to-head competition at the end of the regular season. Currently, the Hens hold an 8-6 advantage over the Indians with two games left to play on August 23rd and 24th. The Hens also have an 8-5 record against the Bats with a three-game series left to play on August 25th - August 27th.

In the event that the Mud Hens get swept in either series, they would hold the upper hand in hosting any tie breaker game scenario that would take place on Tuesday, September 5.

The rundown of the tiebreaker formats look like this...

In the event of a three way tie for first, the division winner will be declared on the bases of head-to-head records and the remaining two teams will then play a one game playoff for the wild card position if eligible.

If all three teams end the season in a tie for first but no team has a good enough record to qualify for the wild card spot then the three teams will meet in a doubleheader at what will likely be Fifth Third Field. If the case arises, Indianapolis would face off against Louisville and the winner of that game would take on the Mud Hens to decide the winner of the IL West division.
