Goldeyes Tough, but Gary Takes Win
August 9, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
On a night when the Winnipeg Goldeyes (38-37) climbed back from two deficits, a third rally couldn't be found.
The Goldeyes dropped a 7-5 decision to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (38-37) Monday night at Canwest Park in a three and a half hour marathon.
Down 2-0 in the fifth, Winnipeg scored twice to tie the game, only to see the RailCats take a 5-2 lead in the sixth. Vince Harrison brought Winnipeg back to within one with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and Winnipeg tied the game with a single run in the seventh.
However, Gary would take the lead for good in the eighth inning when Mike Valadez smacked a two-run home run to win the game.
Jeff Williams earned the win for Gary, while Zach Baldwin, who gave up the Valadez home run, takes the loss for Winnipeg. Andy Shipman pitched the ninth inning for the RailCats to get his 17th save of the season.
Winnipeg is now tied with Gary and the Joliet JackHammers for third place in the Northern League, six games back of the first-place Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
Game 2 of this four-game series goes tomorrow night at Canwest Park. Game time is 7 p.m.
Tomorrow Night
Probable Pitchers GAR TBA vs. WPG Antony Bello (3-5, 4.91) Time: 7:00 p.m. Radio: 1290 CFRW
