Short, who is currently tied for the Northern League lead in home runs, batted .333 (10-for-30) with six home runs, nine runs scored, and a league-high 13 RBI in eight games played for the Fielders. The bulk of the damage occurred over a three game span versus the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks where he hit four home runs and 11 RBI. On the season, he is batting .319 with 24 home runs and 61 RBI. His RBI total is tied for the second in the league and trails the leader by only one. Previously this year, the 23- year-old outfielder was selected to the Northern League All-Star Team.
Short is playing his first season in the Northern League, but second under current Lake County Manager Fran Riordan. He played for Riordan last season with the Kalamazoo Kings in the Frontier League where he finished the year ranked second in the league in batting (.360) while posting nine home runs and 46 RBI in 58 games played.
The 6-2, 200-pounder was originally drafted out of high school by Florida Marlins in the 37th round of the 2005 amateur draft, but did not sign. He went on to play collegiately at Mount Hood Community College (Gresham, OR) prior to eventually signing with the Marlins organization in 2007. He was acquired by Lake County on February 1st, 2010 in a multi-player trade with Kalamazoo.
McTamney, who appeared in four games for Rockford, went 2-1 with a 1.35 ERA during the week for the RiverHawks. Over a four-day period, he appeared in three games winning two and losing one for the 'Hawks. On the week, he pitched 5.2 innings, allowing only one run on two hits while striking out nine and walking none. He extended a personal streak of 13 consecutive innings of not allowing a base on balls dating back to July 18th. During that span, he has struck out 13 batters and only yielded three base hits.
The right-hander is playing his first season in the Northern League, but second with the RiverHawks after going 4-3 with a 4.53 ERA over nine starts in 2008. Appearing in 26 games out of the bullpen this year, he is 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA. Over those 43.1 innings pitched, he has only allowed 40 hits while striking out nearly a batter an inning (37 SO/43.1 IP). He was signed by the RiverHawks on May 17th, 2010.
The 6-1, 190-pound right-hander is playing his fifth professional season. He originally signed as a non-drafted free agent with Fullerton of the Golden Baseball League after having played collegiately at Wagner College (Staten Island, NY). In his four previous years of playing professionally, he played for five different teams in four different leagues. In addition, he was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies organization prior to the start of the 2007 season. Possessing a 90+ mph fastball and knuckleball, he was named one of Baseball America's Top Indy Prospects in 2006.
