August 9, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Lake County Fielders News Release
The Northern League has announced that Lake County Fielders left fielder has been named Northern League Player of the Week for the period ending August 8th, 2010.
Short, who is currently tied for the Northern League lead in home runs, batted .333 (10-for-30) with six home runs, nine runs scored, and a league-high 13 RBI in eight games played for the Fielders. The bulk of the damage occurred over a three game span versus the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks where he hit four home runs and 11 RBI. On the season, he is batting .319 with 24 home runs and 61 RBI. His RBI total is tied for the second in the league and trails the leader by only one. Previously this year, the 23-year-old outfielder was selected to the Northern League All-Star Team.
Short is playing his first season in the Northern League, but second under current Lake County Manager Fran Riordan. He played for Riordan last season with the Kalamazoo Kings in the Frontier League where he finished the year ranked second in the league in batting (.360) while posting nine home runs and 46 RBI in 58 games played.
The 6-2, 200-pounder was originally drafted out of high school by the Florida Marlins in the 37th round of the 2005 amateur draft, but did not sign. He went on to play collegiately at Mount Hood Community College (Gresham, OR) prior to eventually signing with the Marlins organization in 2007. He was acquired by Lake County on February 1st, 2010 in a multi-player trade with Kalamazoo.
The Lake County Fielders are part of the independent Northern League and represent Lake County's only professional sports team. The team is owned in part by long-time baseball fanatic and Academy award-winning actor Kevin Costner. The new stadium facility, home to the Fielders, is located at the corner of Route 173 and Green Bay Road in Zion, Illinois.
Tickets to all 2010 home games cost only $5. The Fielders have two remaining homestands; a seven-game set beginning August 16th and a six-game set beginning September 1st. To find more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.fieldersbaseball.com or call the front office at 847-731-8000.
